Words and Pictures

One childhood text that I tend to remember is Corduroy. This is the story of a teddy bear that lives in a department store but is never bought. One day a little girl wants to buy him, but her mother points out that he is missing one of the buttons on his overalls. That night he decides to explore the department store in search of a button. He doesn't find a button, but the next day he does find a home and love. Corduroy was one of my all time favorite books growing up. The pictures and words of this book are both equally important. I remember my mom reading it to me and all I could do was look at the pictures. From learning about how the position of the pictures means different things, I can understand the story more in depth. I’m noticing why the author put certain pictures in specific areas and I think that is so interesting. It really shows how much I have already learned in this class. Whenever I read children’s books, I do read them differently than I would have two years ago. From our exercise in class where we had to try and figure out the story without reading the words, makes me want to see if I can figure out any more stories. Some of my other childhood all time favorite books are The Rainbow Fish, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairlystupid Tales, and all the Berenstain Bear books. I think Rainbow Fish had the most eye catching illustrations. When I read a book with pictures I look at the details of the picture; whether it is big or small and the color. Children books of the 90’s were definitely the best children’s books.

  1. I'm so glad that you enjoyed class and that you are interested in picture books! Corduroy is a real classic, and I bet if you went back over it again today, you would find something interesting: the little girl and the mother in the story are African-American. It is something that is never said in the text of the book but if you look real close, the girl and mother are of a lighter skin color as to not make it so noticeable to the audience. And since Corduroy was first published in the late 1960's and the moral of the story is about acceptance, you can see what ideology the book is portraying to its audience.

90's picture books are pretty great. Stinky Cheese Man was one of my favorites and if you are interested the same author Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith have another spin off fairy-tale picture book called The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. You will love it.

  2. I love these books so much too! All of the ones that you have mentioned are probably some of my favorites. I can absolutely understand what it's like to learn something in class and then go back and read the book and you understand more that is in the book. It's really cool and it makes you want to read more books because you want to see what else you've noticed.

  3. The Berenstein bear books were my all time favoirte series when I was a kid, that's the text I wrote about. But I also loved the rainbow fish because of the cool pictures and how his scales were so vibrant and stuck out so much. I for sure agree that 90's picture books were the best, definitely make you remember old memories.

  4. I loved rainbow fish. I thought it was so cool how they made him shiny. I must have just liked shiny things as a child because that is mainly what I find important. I guess that moral was to share so I shared this comment with you.Enjoy. :)
